Artemis Fowl was written by Eoin Colfer in 2001 and published in New York City by Hyperion Books. Although this adventure/fantasy was written by an American it is staged mainly in Ireland. In the beginning of the book, Artemis travels to the sweltering city of Ho Chi Minh, which was called Saigon, and is located in Vietnam because he wants to find a fantastical fairy book. This lively, suspenseful and humorous book features the boy wonder, Artemis Fowl in his attempt to get gold from the fairies when he kidnaps one of them. Being the first book in a series of 6, this book starts the chronicles of the adventure for Artemis Fowl. Only 5 books are completed. Hopefully, the 6th book in the Artemis Fowl series by Colfer will be out soon.

Artemis Fowl, who is the central character, is a boy of 12, a genius, and a criminal mastermind. Accompanying him on all his adventures, his massive bodyguard and sidekick, Butler, protects Artemis, aids him, and obeys him on all his capers. In this 1st book, Artemis promptly discovers that fairies do exist when he finds their Fairy Book, which is the rule book for all fairies and called The Book. Artemis is greedy and decides to kidnap a fairy because he wants to ransom her for precious fairy gold. The fairy’s name is Holly. She has a centaur friend, Foaly and a disgusting dwarf digger named Mulch Diggums, to help her thwart Artemis’ plans. Sneakily, Foaly and Mulch Diggums try to free Holly from Artemis. In the end will Holly escape from the boy genius?

Thought provoking, enjoyable, and unique, Artemis Fowl is definitely a great children’s book. From the in-depth and captivating Artemis to the stubborn and green Holly, this book boasts a wide range of characters. This story will keep the reader guessing until the very last page because of its unique storyline. Excitingly, vividly, and startlingly, at one point a troll bursts into the Fowl Manor, which is Artemis’s house, and rampages around while

Please do not buy this watch. I had problems with it immediately. I followed the instructions exactly and nothing worked. So I googled “Garmin Forerunner 305 does not work” and it seems like everyone who bought the watch had the same issue. (I think Garmin must be the ones giving this watch “fake” good reviews) Several people called Garmin support and were told to reset the watch. Sometimes this worked but people still had issues with the watch randomly turning off even when fully charged. The watch I bought malfunctioned several different times buzzing continuously and the screen was frozen. I tried the “soft” and “hard” resets and neither worked. The watch would sometimes turn on and then none of the buttons worked. Then it would randomly turn off again. The people were posting that the “hard” reset button worked for them every time the watch malfunctioned but that by doing this it erased all the memory. I would not want my watch to constantly malfunction and then in order to fix it, you have to erase everything. The purpose of the watch is to track your progress. Some people also were told by Garmin they needed to download an upgrade in order for the watch to work properly. (By the way, there are no instructions in the box regarding any of this and there is nothing in the box that tells you about resetting the watch or what to do if it is not functioning properly) So anyways, I can’t even download the upgrade because the watch will not connect to the computer at all. You also cannot install the CD unless the watch is connected. As you can tell I am very frustrated with this watch and I just bought it yesterday brand new from Best Buy and I will be returning it. I am very disappointed though because I am training to run a marathon. I was looking forward to some fun trail runs and then tracking it with the watch. I really like this unit. I did the Firmware update as soon as I got it so I don’t know if this solved a lot of the problems people were talking about. Also mine was made on August 2009 so maybe I received a better microphone because it works great. I have had no problems with this at all. One annoyance is that the contact transfer from my phone (LG Rumor2) shows all contacts as cell phone number even though in my phone it shows House or cell phone. May just be my phone. I am not sure I don’t have that many contacts so I went in and adjusted my phone book to say the name and what it is. To everyone having trouble read the book completely this will solve problems like changing the color and getting everything just right. There aren’t very many points of interest but as long as you have the address you can find just about anything. Every address I have typed in has been found. I had trouble at first but I wasn’t scrolling down to additional choices. I centered my GPS antenna on the dash until I had the most signal. It seems to be very accurate compared to my old system that I had to hook on to the dash. I am going to put my old gps in the glove box and when I travel and need to find something very bad I can pull it out and find it on there. I have a Sandisk USB and it works fine with this unit. I have my whole music collection on this (8GB drive). The cd player worked fine I used it a couple of times but will probably not use it since I have all my music loaded into my Flash Drive (wont Skip). I haven’t had it skip in this unit but in my factory radio they would every once in a while. I like using a flash drive because when I get new music I can update it and don’t have to burn another CD or worry about there being problems with them scratched. Also hooked up my Sirius Radio through the AUX jack and it works great. I like it this way so that I can control it on a separate unit that I can take in the house and use. I find this friction mount to be very much superior to any of the suction mounts. It’s quick and easy to use and leaves no telltale rings on your windshield. It is very stable on the dashboard and can be moved to any position or angle that you need. Delivery in frustration-free packaging was also a plus.

I liked mine so much I have bought them as gifts for others with Garmin GPS units.

Before I begin with my complaints, I would like to say that this is one of my favorite books of all time. However, I did have a hard time understanding the point behind it all. I mean one second it’s telling you to kill John Lennon, the next it’s telling you to kill Ronald Reagan in order to impress Jodie Foster. Well, which is it? I suppose it’s possible that the book wanted me to kill both of them but if that’s the case then why not simply state it outright, instead of leaving it up to interpretation like it did?
Furthermore, now that both the people that the book instructs on killing are dead, it seems a little dated. Sure, it can be read as a coming-of-age-tale, but to do that you must read between the lines. I tried calling Mr. Salinger to have him clear it all up, but he wouldn’t answer. It turns out that in an effort to become even more reclusive, he’s died.
My favorite quotation from the book: “Kill John Lennon. Go ahead, you know you want to. Just do it.” A real example of classic prose, a skill that unfortunately seems to have been lost by many modern writers.
Overall, I give it five dead celebrities out of five.
